Happy Birthday Sankofa!
It's our first birthday ... so come along and help celebrate!
It's hard to believe that on 16th August, our Gertrude Street store will have been open 12 months - and thanks to all your support (and purchases), we're still smiling despite the 'GFC'!
We want to say 'thanks' to all our great customers who have shown their support for Sankofa and fair trade ... and would love you to join in the festivities ...
What's happening :
Friday 14th August to Sunday 17th August - in-store cake, chocolate, tea and coffee samples, all customers go in the draw to win one of four $50 Sankofa vouchers;
Saturday 5p.m. to 7p.m. - champers and nibbles (RSVP by email to kym@sankofa.com.au would be appreicated).
For those of you who can't make it to the store we've got something for you too ..... free postage on all on-line orders (within Australia) until the end of August (just select the 'Pick-Up Melbourne' option for free postage).
International customers don't miss out either ... you'll get a free block of Alter Eco fairtrade chocolate with all on-line orders until the end of August.
There really is something for everyone.
Hope to see or hear from you during our birthday celebrations.
Cheers, Kym Pointon
Run for Refugees!
It's official .... I'm completely crazy ... had a momentary lapse of judgement .... next minute I've signed up to run a half marathon (that's 21.1km for the unitiated ... or 13 miles in the 'old money') .. its all for a good cause - a fundraiser for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) .
The ASRC provide aid, advocacy and health services to thousands of asylum seekers ... 96% of their funding comes from donations and fundraising activities ... so that's where the Melbourne Marathon on 11th October, comes into it .... the ASRC hope to have a team of 1,000 sponsored runners and walkers in the marathon, half marathon, 10km and 5km distances.
For those of you who know me, you will know that this distance will not be a 'walk in the park' (did I mention that it's 21.1km!!!)... but I take comfort in the common belief that long distance running is '20% fitness and 80% determination' ... ummm now to work on that fitness!
All donations over $2 are tax deductable (you'll receive a receipt after the event).
What can you do to help the ASRC continue their great work .... your bit's easy .... just sponsor me ... and I'll do the hard part and run 21.1km - send an email to kym@sankofa.com.au (I need all the encouragement I can get!)
To learn more about the ASRC check out their website www.acrc.org.au

New Products - Ki Kati Bags
They're hot off the press .... just arrived today ... wax print bags from Ki Kati in Uganda.
There's two styles to choose from ... the casual shoulder bag and the 'big bag' - big enough to hold it ALL!
Ki Kati is a fair trade non-profit organisation that supports tailors in Kampala, Uganda. Started by an Australian couple who went to Uganda to establish Kiva micro-finance loans there .... loved the place ... and couldn't leave.
Ki Kati uses profits from the sale of these bags to fund business skill training and education and medical funds for the tailors and their families.
Each bag comes with a tag introducing you to the individual tailor who made your bag.
