Title
Hi there,
I can't believe this is my first Newsletter for 2009 - and its March already! One minute its Christmas, and before you know it, its Easter ... then its Christmas again!
So far this year we've had stalls at the Globe to Globe music festival hosted by the Kingston City Council in January and also the inaugral Thin Green Line Music Festival down at Somers on the Mornington Peninsula in February ...
.... And this weekend we'll be at the Harmony Festival in East St Kilda ... the shop is now open 7 days a week so festivals are a great way for me to convince myself I've still got a social life because I get to go 'away' for the weekend, hear great music and it doesn't feel like 'work'.
Don't forget to let your friends know about Sankofa - just click on the 'Pass it On' button on the left-hand side of this newsletter to forward it to them.
Thanks,
Kym Pointon
Fairtrade Easter Eggs Are Here!
Easter is just around the corner ... and if your Easter celebrations include the eating of chocolate then look no further.
Melbourne chocolate company Chocalatier has produced 100g fairtrade Easter Eggs - these deliciously decadent 'guilt free' eggs come in milk and dark chocolate.
Plus we've got our usual stock of Cocolo fairtrade blocks of chocolate ... in delicious flavours dark 70% cocoa, dark mint, dark orange, milk and milk hazlenut.
See ... our chocolate range covers all food groups!
Why eat fairtrade chocolate this Easter (or any time for that matter) .... because it not only guarantees a better deal for cocoa producers but also that no child labour has been used in the process ... and what's more it tastes GREAT!

Bakuseka Majja - Uganda
We recently received recycled paper beads made by the Bakuseka Majja Women's Co-Operative in Uganda.
The Co-operative was established in 2005 by Lindy Alexander, an Australian volunteering in the women's rural village, and a fellow English volunteer.
Lindy says she wanted to find a project that would provide the women with income but also that the women could manage around their subsistence farming.
The 42 women in the Co-operative were taught how to make paper beads using paper from magazines and posters - the paper is rolled into beads and varnished - and the end result is a beautiful and unique necklace - with each bead being totally unique.
The name Bakuseka Majja translates as 'they laugh at us when we are going to try, but when we come back (successful) they are not laughing' - the women chose this name as it symbolises the intial community attitude towards them when the project started.
The women are a member of the National Association of Women's Organisations of Uganda who are a member of IFAT (International Fair Trade Assn).

Sankofa's Customer Reward Program
Have you ever wanted to invest in a small business - maybe help a fisherman in Peru buy new nets or help a co-op of soap makers in Uganda buy raw materials?
Well we've developed a unique customer rewards program that keeps giving you that 'warm fuzzy' feeling you get when you buy fair trade products plus gives you cash back .... its a cash back program ... but with a twist ...
Yes, you can get your 'cash back' but first you must give it away - that's right - you must lend the money at last once to a low-income entrepreneur registered with Kiva micro-finance organisation - why ... because micro-finance schemes are another brilliant way of empowering people to fight poverty.
Here's how it works ...
- For every $500 spent at Sankofa you will receive a Kiva Gift Certificate to the value of USD$25.
- You redeem the Gift Certificate by choosing an entrepreneur registered on the Kiva website to lend the money to.
- Once your selected entrepreneur has repaid the loan you have the option to - (a) re-lend the money to another entrepreneur in need; (b) donate the money to Kiva towards their admin costs; or (c) withdraw your money and get your 'cash back'.
To learn more about Kiva check out their website www.kiva.org
To register for the program you can either sign-up in store (231 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy) or send us an email (info@sankofa.com.au)
