Location! Location! Location!

Greetings,

Drum roll please - we've got BIG news - Sankofa is going 'bricks and clicks' - or is it 'clicks and mortar' - whichever way it is, we're doing it.  After 11 very long (and stressful) weeks of negotiations we've leased a shop!

Everyone is familiar with the number one rule in real estate - 'location, location, location' - well we've got it, we've got it, we've got it!

231 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy (Melbourne)

There's 'Books for Cooks' to our left and 'Enoteca Wine Bar' to the right - a great spot!

So ...... we're busy cleaning, painting, concreting, designing shop-fittings and generally running around in circles but hope to be open either the first (or maybe second) week of August - alot depends on availability of tradesmen - but as soon as a date is confirmed you'll hear about it.

We've also been ordering new products and hopefully they'll start arriving soon - we're in the hands of the postal services of Ethiopia, Swaziland, South Africa, Rwanda, Ghana and Burkina Faso ..... so fingers crossed!

Watch this space.

Fatima Self Help Centre - Thailand

The first order of some new products arrived this week from Thailand.

The women at the Fatima Self Help Centre make the most beautiful products for children - they're both fun and educational and just beautifully made.

We've got cloth books to teach children about colours, numbers, animals, how to tell the time and much, much more - the books are interactive with detachable characters and shapes that velcro onto the pages, they can be moved around to make up a story - they also use a variety of textures for children to explore the feel of felt, plastic, cotton, wool etc.

The Fatima Self Help Centre is based in Bangkok and was established over 25 years ago by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd.  The Sisters of the Good Shepherd work with and support the micro-enterprises of marginalised women in over 65 countries around the world.

The Fatima Self Help Centre provides skills training and employment for over 100 women and the Centre also provides day care facilities for women with children.
